Testing of Eyelergy on animals has not been necessary because similar formulations and all of its ingredients are already well established and in widespread use.
Eyelergy is a medical device and so it doesn’t have any ‘active ingredients’ in the sense used in medicines. For the full list of ingredients, see the Product Leaflet which can be downloaded here.
The eye drops inside the droppers are sterile and preservative-free, so it is very important to keep the droppers clean and undamaged. The best way to do this is by keeping unused droppers in the foil sachet.
The individual droppers are for single use only; any content left in the dropper should be discarded straight after use. Unopened droppers should be returned to the foil sachet for added protection and can be used until the use-by date printed on the pack, which is the last day of the month printed.
We recommend that Eyelergy is stored at normal room temperature (below 25°C). However, if you find cold eye drops soothing, Eyelergy can be placed in the fridge for a short time before use.
Only the Eyelergy drops as such, i.e. the liquid inside each of the plastic droppers, are sterile so opening the outer foil sachet does not change this. The liquid drops inside the unopened plastic droppers will remain sterile and suitable for use up to the
use-by date on the pack.
The drops do not include a preservative, and we developed them this way deliberately so people wearing contact lenses can use them. This means that, after opening the droppers, the liquid drops inside are prone to microbial contamination. However, the following steps will help to avoid this:
- wash your hands before opening a dropper and use it immediately
- prevent the open tip from coming into contact with the eye(s) or any other surface
The droppers and the small twist off tip should be safely disposed of using normal household waste. You can recycle the empty carton with cardboard. Always keep the droppers and the twist off caps out of reach of small children as they can pose a choking hazard.
Although the symptoms may not be the same for everyone, typically they include a sensation of having something in the eye and possibly some discomfort, itching, redness or inflammation. For some people, however, it makes the eyes more watery.
After being applied to the eye, Eyelergy eye drops form a protecting, lubricating and hydrating film over the surface of the eye by the action of blinking. The excess that the eye cannot accommodate will run out of the eye. When the eyes are irritated by dust or pollen, this helps by diluting and rinsing contaminants from the eye(s).
By blinking, the protective and lubricating effect of Eyelergy may be maintained between applications as the eye drops are spread over the eye surface.
What is the difference between Eyelergy and some other eye drops available for treating hayfever and dry eyes?
Eyelergy eye drops are preservative-free. This is important because sometimes preservatives cause allergy and inflammation, particularly if used repeatedly. Also, people who wear contact lenses are generally advised not to use eye products containing preservatives.
By presenting the drops in the form of sterile, single-use droppers, there is no need for preservatives that can cause problems of their own. Another difference is that Eyelergy drops do not contain a medicine as such, and instead work by physical means alone.
You can use Eyelergy as frequently as needed, whether you are using it for the relief of hayfever/allergies or for dry eyes. Often this is around 3 or 4 times a day. If you find you need to use Eyelergy long-term, or if your symptoms get worse, we recommend you obtain advice from a doctor, pharmacist or optician.
Yes, Eyelergy eye drops are compatible with all types of contact lenses and can be used before or after lenses have been inserted. Rarely, you may experience some temporary stickiness on application. If this happens, remove your lenses before applying the drops and then wait for at least 30 minutes before replacing them.
As for any side effect, if the stickiness persists or is unacceptable, the best advice is to stop using the drops and seek advice from a doctor or optician.
Eyelergy is recommended for use by children 6 years old and above. This is because if younger children suffer with symptoms suggestive of hayfever or dry eyes, we recommend they are seen by their doctor.
Yes, this is deliberate to ensure the dropper is formed properly during manufacture. However, there is plenty for a single recommended application of 1 to 2 drops into both eyes, with any remainder being discarded.
This product can be used during pregnancy and by breast-feeding mothers. The ingredients have been in widespread use in this and similar preparations for many years, without reports of problems. However, safety trials in pregnancy and breastfeeding have not been conducted.
Sometimes sensitive or irritated eyes feel slightly uncomfortable immediately after applying eye drops. As the eye condition resolves, the discomfort should lessen. Provided the ‘stinging’ sensation is only mild and temporary, it is fine to continue using Eyelergy.
However, if any stinging is unacceptable, or if you experience any other adverse effect, stop using Eyelergy and tell your doctor or optician.
Although Eyelergy eye drops are not known to affect or be affected by other products used in the eye, it is generally best to avoid using them at the same time unless this is prescribed/recommended by a doctor or optician.
Where combined use is considered necessary, leave at least 15 minutes between using each product, and apply Eyelergy after the other product.
Yes, Eyelergy eye drops are not known to affect or be affected by medicines taken orally. Indeed, because Eyelergy eye drops work differently from medicines taken by mouth you may find it helpful to use both.
This is very unlikely to be problematic owing to the nature of the ingredients and the very small quantity of drops in individual droppers. In any event, any adverse effects are unlikely.
